Samuel "Sam" Edward Winn, Jr. was born on March 6, 1953 in South Gate, California. He was the son of the late Samuel Edward Winn, Sr. and Lillie Hackworth Billings. His grandparents, William and Mae Hackworth came into his life as a young child and raised him as their own.

At an early age, Sam accepted Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior. He was baptized at and attended Community Baptist Church under the leadership of the late Pastor Calvin C. Robertson, Sr.

Sam received his education in the Dallas Independent School District. He graduated from South Oak Cliff High School in the Class of 1971. While attending South Oak Cliff High School, Sam was on the Track & Field team all four years. Even tying a National Record in the 4 x 400 Relay as a freshman.

Sam received a full scholarship in Track & Field at El Paso College. He became injured while on the Track & Field team at El Paso College and his time there was cut short. Shortly after, he joined the United States Air Force in the year 1973 where he served as a Staff Sergeant. He served his country for 8 years, stationed in places such as Turkey and Japan, just to name a few. Upon receiving an honorable discharge, he returned to Dallas and found a career as a mail carrier for the United States Postal Service. While being a devoted mail carrier, Sam enrolled at the University of Texas at Arlington where he obtained a Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice. He became a Station Supervisor, and retired from the United States Postal Service after 25 years.

While traveling the world, Sam was part of a Corvette club. He admired the sport car's design, and stocked horsepower so much that he owned 5 different Corvettes in his lifetime. Sam was a man of few words but adored his family and expressed that love daily. He enjoyed watching sports, movies, traveling, various genres of music, dancing and playing dominions at family gatherings. He also was a pretty gifted artist who enjoyed sketching. This genuine soul dedicated his life to loving his daughter and grandson. Sam was extremely proud of his daughter and grandson's various educational, sporting and life accomplishments.
